I woke up this morning with John 15.13 on my mind: "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." Thinking about it, I have always heard the context of this verse as being willing to die for someone. While, as a Christian, that idea is the end all, I believe that sometimes we comfort (and/or convince) ourselves that "I would be willing to die for someone" and therefore, I obey Jesus' teachings. What if "that he lay down his life" is talking about setting aside all of my comforts to help my fellow man (see the Parable of the Good Samaritan ~ Luke 10.25)?
Penny and I have been given opportunities to go down to Choluteca, Honduras a few times in the past months and have seen what easily could be deemed "the poorest of the poor". During these visits, (and in reading Crazy Love, Be Last and the Bible) we have come to the realization that God is calling for people to respond to the need there. We believe that the call is coming to us, specifically, and so we are in the preparation phase of permanently moving to Honduras ~ this may be a multiple year process as we have loose ends to tie up here, however; we are aware of ways that we can assist those in Honduras from here and are presently beginning that pursuit.
Casa Hogar Vida is a ministry that assists the poor and HIV-infected people in the Choluteca area...please check out their site.
Not everyone is "called" to go to a foreign country ~ their work can/should be done here. "There are poor here in our town/state" ~ we have heard that observation many times and are aware of physical and spiritual needs stateside. God wants us all to be available.
We believe that God has placed Choluteca in our hearts and we need to pursue that direction. Additionally, God has and is providing the resources to make this change in our lives.
